Hello Sunshine! Last week I had my nephews visit for the week & I think this is normal that the 2 are completely opposite. One is into museums and the other is into playing at the parks. We compromised, one day at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum & a Pinball arcade then Zilker Park & Barton Springs to exercise both. Another day visiting The State of Texas Capitol, another pinball arcade & park for exercise.

I am a Native Austinite & I have a son that I have taken to both Texas landmarks frequently when he was younger, also I attend mass weekly at a Cathedral about 2 blocks away from the State Capitol that I see it so often, I kind of take it for granted. I thought I would share a few pics I took with my nephews.

The original Goddess of Liberty that towers above the Capitol is in the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum. When she was replaced in 1985 my dad took us to the capitol to see it. I still have the memory. There was a crowd and my brother & I had hot cocoa, while my dad had coffee. I am sure my dad is the reason why I have Texas Pride today. When I was telling my son all of the places I took my nephews to, Barton Springs, Zilker Park, The museum, The Capitol; he said those are all the places I took him to. We were frequent visitors of the museum because we always saw the new exhibits.

The Rotunda ceiling is grand and has a star with the letters TEXAS around it. It is a must to get in the center of the floor look up and take a photo. Just as much as when you get to the top floor, it is a must to look down and take a photo of the floor.

On the walls of the rotunda are painted portraits of the past Governors of Texas. I took a photo of Ann Richards because, I took my son to her Texas Flag-draped casket in The Texas Capitol when she died. Something I will always remember because there where so many waiting to see her.

I often use The Great Texas political & historian, Bob Bullocks quote of “God Bless Texas.” He has it on his headstone at the Texas State Cemetery. He had a love for Texas that that is more than any of us can claim, but I will always aspire to.

The State of Texas Capitol was Completed in 1888. An extraordinary edifice by any measure, the 1888 Texas Capitol is the largest in gross square footage of all state capitols and is second in total size only to the National Capitol in Washington, D.C. Like several other state capitols, the 1888 Texas Capitol surpasses the National Capitol in height, rising almost 15 feet above its Washington counterpart.

In 1993, the $75 million underground Capitol Extension was completed in the North, doubling the square footage available to Capitol occupants and providing much improved functionality. In 1995, a comprehensive interior and exterior restoration of the original building was completed at a cost of approximately $98 million. Finally, in 1997, the park-like grounds surrounding the Capitol were given a much needed $8 million renovation and restoration.

Thanks for visiting & please share.

Lots of love from Austin, TX,

No Tricks, Just Treat Others!

Treat Others

Treat Others

Hello Sunshine! Ok, be honest… How many Pumpkin Spice Latte’s have you had so far this season? I know! I’m finding pumpkin flavored everything everywhere! I love it! I haven’t found anything unusually ‘Pumpkin’ flavored. I do love it when my husband & I shop and he points out pumpkin items to me. He’s so silly! Let me know if you find something silly or unusual.

Ok, if you follow my Instagram or Twitter, you probably have seen that I like to treat anyone that treats me. Now, I would definitely take all of my caregivers to lunch if my budget could afford, but I have to do a gesture that is more in my pocket book.Especially with my abundance of caregivers!

What You Need To Treat

What You Need To Treat

So, I give these cute little buckets of sweets to those kind caregivers! If you would like to Treat others, you don’t need much, and you can get this at your supermarket when you are getting your groceries like I did. You can dress these up, but sometimes I have not been so prepared and I have picked up prior to my appointments & just put it together in the car on the way.

Put Your Treats Together

Put Your Treats Together

I just place the tissue in, I mix up the candy, sometimes I write a card & that’s it! Looks Super Cute! Different seasons call for different fun packaging. I also like to put non-candy snacks, like granola bars, individually wrapped mixed nuts, Gold Fish Brand Snacks, pretzels, non-chocolate candy, etc. In our Texas Summers ~ Popsicles are one of my favorites to give! I even give little packs of stationery from my card shop. I just happened to get all chocolate candy this time!

I was recently released from my Orthopedic Surgeon(YIPPEE) so I wanted to return to their office and give them a bucket and let them know about the post that I had written about my ankle, remember: So I Broke My Ankle, Big Deal .

I like to drop these off at my post office, my doctor’s office, my local coffee shop that I frequent & more. I love my native Austin & it is a growing city, but I want to keep it the small city that I grew up in. Any way that I can keep it where we know each others names and we help each other & have the ‘Small Town’ feel I grew up in, I want it.  Well, it’s just nice to treat those that treat us, even with a little something. I am not trying to guilt anyone, just letting you know a little way I pay it forward & keep us smiling at each other instead of ignoring each other as we go about our days.

I hope I see you today & give you a smile as always,

Lots of love

Don Julio ALIENTO A TEQUILA EXHIBIT

Don Julio ALIENTO A TEQUILA EXHIBIT

Hello Friends! I wanted to tell you about this fantastic exhibit that is showing now through November 29th in Austin, Texas at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. On Saturday, September 13th guests gathered at the Mexican American Cultural Center to celebrate photographer Joel Salcido’s exhibit, Aliento A Tequila. Joel Salcido enjoys photographing our beautiful Texas and you can find his work in Texas Monthly.

Also, Tequila Don Julio Master Distiller and inspiration behind the photography series, Enrique de Colsa, was in attendance for the event to greet everyone and accept an image that Salcido took at the Don Julio distillery, La Primavera. While taking in the exhibit, guests enjoyed authentic Mexican fare alongside Tequila Don Julio specialty cocktails made by local mixologist Javier Flores, including the Don Burro made with Tequila Don Julio Blanco, ginger cordial, fresh lime and cucumber juice and a house made apple serum.

The event came full circle as guests enjoyed the images while learning about the Tequila making process, from harvesting, cooking, to distilling the Tequila and tasting Tequila Don Julio 70, 1942 and REAL, three of the añejo and extra-añejo variants that have been aged perfectly in American White Oak Barrels until ready.

Admission is always free at the Mexican American Cultural Center for Exhibits and you can receive a temporary parking pass once requested at the main office.

Here are the recipes for the fantastic drinks served at the event containing Tequila Don Julio so you can make at home: Please Click on images if you would like to enlarge.

Do you have a favorite cocktail that you make with Tequila Don Julio? Would you rather sip on Tequila Don Julio? I really enjoyed sipping Don Julio 1942, but these specialty cocktails are definitely going to be at our next function. I always love a signature cocktail at our parties. If you are 21 years or older & follow @donjuliotequila on Instagram, they post specialty cocktails on their feed.

Thanks for coming by friends & Lots of love,

Food Swaps Are The Bee’s Knees!

Food Swap

Food Swap

Wow! What a fantastic evening with The ATXswappers! You may have read a previous post of mine, The Beginners Guide To Pickled Fredricksburg Peaches, where I mentioned my girlfriend Andi had invited me to join her in attending a food swap. Well, all of those cans of peaches I made for the swap are gone and swapped for some delicious & home cooked, homemade or homegrown goods!

I am so grateful to have Andi for letting me know about this fantastic event and grateful for all of the friendly swappers I met last night! I really love meeting new friends & I look forward to attending more Swapping Events!

Guess what? Food Swap Networks are not just in Austin, Texas! Check Food Swap Network to find one where you live & you can participate. I brought 7 jars of my Pickled Peaches. 8 jars, but I needed 1 jar for everyone to sample. It’s good to sample your good to ‘sell’ your item so that other swappers want to swap with you. After you place your item on the table, we all place our samples on a separate sample table. Perfect for us to all mingle and meet new people and ask what each other made to swap. While we are sampling, more swappers are coming in. Yum, more samples are coming in. Our event is so organized. We have Kate from Hip Girl’s Guide To Homemaking & she has so much information on her blog about swaps. Also, Meg from Brooklyn Homesteader is another host that keeps everything very organized. Everything at our swap went absolutely perfect and I know it would not, had it not been for our great hosts & our great swappers.

Oh, not everyone brought 7 items (as I did), or more of their swap item. Some swappers just brought 1-3 items. Some brought more. Some brought a variety of goods. I am sure most Food Swaps are very open to what you bring.

I do hope you attend a Food Swap sometime, I really think you will enjoy it!

Lots of love to you,

Lisa

I was a kid, my parents did not take me to a little park, we packed up and picnicked in Zilker Park. We went to The Zilker Kite Fest every year. This year the kite fest had to be cancelled due to rain~heartbreaking. We rode The Zilker Zephr, the kiddie train that went throughout the park, and waved to the park goers & runners along the Hike & Bike Trail & they waved back. I have many fond memories there.
