Hello Sunshine! Last week I had my nephews visit for the week & I think this is normal that the 2 are completely opposite. One is into museums and the other is into playing at the parks. We compromised, one day at the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum & a Pinball arcade then Zilker Park & Barton Springs to exercise both. Another day visiting The State of Texas Capitol, another pinball arcade & park for exercise.

I am a Native Austinite & I have a son that I have taken to both Texas landmarks frequently when he was younger, also I attend mass weekly at a Cathedral about 2 blocks away from the State Capitol that I see it so often, I kind of take it for granted. I thought I would share a few pics I took with my nephews.

The original Goddess of Liberty that towers above the Capitol is in the Bob Bullock Texas History Museum. When she was replaced in 1985 my dad took us to the capitol to see it. I still have the memory. There was a crowd and my brother & I had hot cocoa, while my dad had coffee. I am sure my dad is the reason why I have Texas Pride today. When I was telling my son all of the places I took my nephews to, Barton Springs, Zilker Park, The museum, The Capitol; he said those are all the places I took him to. We were frequent visitors of the museum because we always saw the new exhibits.

The Rotunda ceiling is grand and has a star with the letters TEXAS around it. It is a must to get in the center of the floor look up and take a photo. Just as much as when you get to the top floor, it is a must to look down and take a photo of the floor.

On the walls of the rotunda are painted portraits of the past Governors of Texas. I took a photo of Ann Richards because, I took my son to her Texas Flag-draped casket in The Texas Capitol when she died. Something I will always remember because there where so many waiting to see her.

I often use The Great Texas political & historian, Bob Bullocks quote of “God Bless Texas.” He has it on his headstone at the Texas State Cemetery. He had a love for Texas that that is more than any of us can claim, but I will always aspire to.

The State of Texas Capitol was Completed in 1888. An extraordinary edifice by any measure, the 1888 Texas Capitol is the largest in gross square footage of all state capitols and is second in total size only to the National Capitol in Washington, D.C. Like several other state capitols, the 1888 Texas Capitol surpasses the National Capitol in height, rising almost 15 feet above its Washington counterpart.

In 1993, the $75 million underground Capitol Extension was completed in the North, doubling the square footage available to Capitol occupants and providing much improved functionality. In 1995, a comprehensive interior and exterior restoration of the original building was completed at a cost of approximately $98 million. Finally, in 1997, the park-like grounds surrounding the Capitol were given a much needed $8 million renovation and restoration.

Thanks for visiting & please share.

Spring Reading

Austin, TX No Place Like Home http://princessmouseycards.com

Austin, TX No Place Like Home
http://princessmouseycards.com

Ok, I have been away for so long! Unfortunately I have had a few ‘episodes’ with my brain injury and I have been unable to post. Just my usual migraines and seizures, but it does keep me from writing. I have also been getting our home ready for a guest, well, guests. We just had my friend Jessica here last week and Next month my brother and my nephews will be here. Jessica was here to speak at Austin’s World Famous SXSW. I felt bad, but I kept telling her it was a big deal that she was speaking at the event because I was making her nervous. I am born/raised Austin, so I know SXSW before it is today. When it was just music and no badges were needed. Oh those were the days. Anyway, she and our other friends did fantastic! They were speaking about ‘How Latina Moms Are Raising Next Gen Coders.’ Yes, SXSW has changed. There is so much going on around the actual Convention Center and so many booths advertising their products & giving their products free to do just that. There are even people walking around as advertising. I was the driver for my friend. She doesn’t live here & I wanted her to have a great time, so it was so fun to see how Austin is still very beautiful and the parks are full outside of SXSW! Of course, get inside the madness and it is full of cars and people.

Well, I have been a busy bee reading for my spring book list. One of my favorite Instagram, @princessmousey friends recommended a book, I Forgot To Remember. I was immediately attracted because it is about a young lady who has had a brain injury and struggled with amnesia. She overcomes amazingly. Reading this book was very good for me, because it helped me to understand that I am not the only one that goes through this.

I like reading Sophia Kinsella books. Sometimes I just need to read a good girl book and the Shopaholic series are my tried and true ‘go to’s’. Having said that, Shopaholic To The Stars is not my favorite of the series. The book took a very long time to get me into it. I can easily read a 400 page book in about 2 days, but this book took me about 2 weeks because I could not find myself getting into it. However, the ending has me wanting to read the next. Go figure!

WOW! The Girl On The Train was amazing. When I was young I loved watching Alfred Hitchcock movies. This book reminded me of watching his movies, like Rear Window. Needless to say, I could not put this book down! If you start this book, look for a thriller.

After reading The Girl On The Train, I asked my Instagram, @princessmousey followers for a recommendation and given The Nightingale. This is a beautiful story of 2 sisters separate lives in German occupied 1939 France. You read the book, you really see how the sisters are different, but as you keep reading are they really that different? It is really a beautifully written book.

I love reading novels to take me to another place & time. I just love to read! You can find me on Goodreads. I really recommend these books. I believe these books were all 300-400 pages, but they are all written so beautifully, the subject is wonderful to take on spring break & are all so exciting that you will be unable to put them down, but that’s just my 2 kisses. You will find every moment of silence or just a moment of alone time to read!

I also want to let you know about e-mails I started receiving from Book Bub. Everyday I get their email of about 1-3 books that are FREE, .99 or $1.99 per book! I have bought a Vegan Cookbook, a Paleo Cookbook and a few novels. Of course, I have just deleted the email most times, but it is good to get a bargain book to download to your tablet.

My favorite is checking the free books on my iTunes books. I always find books there! Always the classics, but they also put newer books. If you have an iPad, check on the very bottom of the iBooks page for Free Books Tab & Weekly Bestsellers Under $4. There are even kid books in there.

Brain Injury Awareness Month
http://princessmouseycards.com

Last thing! March is Brain Injury Awareness Month! I have suffered a brain injury and I live in Texas. In Texas, Governor Greg Abbott has designated March 18 as Brain Injury Awareness Day. The Governor’s office estimates 2 million Texans are living with Traumatic Brain Injury & 144,000 sustained TBI’s in 2014. The Brain Injury Assoc. of America Texas Division assists victims & their families in finding rehab, legal, financial & other support services. 1-800-444-6443. biausa.org

With My Voter Registration Card. It Is A Law In Texas We Need A Photo ID Also To Vote

With My Voter Registration Card. It Is A Law In Texas We Need A Photo ID Also To Vote

Did you know the #1 reason Latinos don’t register to vote is because no one asks? I am a Latina. I am a registered to vote and I exercise my right to vote in every election! Growing up my grandmother would tell me of days when Latinos & African Americans did not have the rights to vote and she was always so happy to know that I was an active voter. I can remember times when I would go over my grandparents home and we would watch debates or election results. We would spend mornings having coffee talking about politics and what we thought about The State of the Union Address the night before. Sometimes we can take for granted our rights and what our ancestors have gone through to give us our rights. I am so grateful for all of those talks with my grandmother so that I never forget.

My Serrano Grandma

My Serrano Grandma

I would like to give you a friendly challenge and ask you to ask 3 Latinos this weekend if they are Registered To Vote. If you are in Texas, like me, Monday October 6th is the Deadline to register to vote & have your 3 Latino’s that you have asked to be able to vote in this November Election.

I have added a link on my blog to the right to direct you to Latinos2014.com and there you can register to vote! See, I make it so super easy for you!

Let’s make our Hispanic Ancestors proud! Exercise our rights that they have fought for.

Si se puede!

As always my dear friends,

Lots of love,

I also wanted to post the website National Hispanic American Heritage Month 2014 again in this post as I did in my previous post talking about Ofrendas. I always encourage learning more about Hispanic Culture.

In addition, I wanted to let you know that I stumbled upon PBS showing documentaries on their website PBS.org for Hispanic Heritage month.

Thank you so much for visiting and thank you for sharing on your social media pages. I really appreciate it!

Don Julio ALIENTO A TEQUILA EXHIBIT

Hello Friends! I wanted to tell you about this fantastic exhibit that is showing now through November 29th in Austin, Texas at the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center. On Saturday, September 13th guests gathered at the Mexican American Cultural Center to celebrate photographer Joel Salcido’s exhibit, Aliento A Tequila. Joel Salcido enjoys photographing our beautiful Texas and you can find his work in Texas Monthly.

Also, Tequila Don Julio Master Distiller and inspiration behind the photography series, Enrique de Colsa, was in attendance for the event to greet everyone and accept an image that Salcido took at the Don Julio distillery, La Primavera. While taking in the exhibit, guests enjoyed authentic Mexican fare alongside Tequila Don Julio specialty cocktails made by local mixologist Javier Flores, including the Don Burro made with Tequila Don Julio Blanco, ginger cordial, fresh lime and cucumber juice and a house made apple serum.

Don Burro Cocktail

The event came full circle as guests enjoyed the images while learning about the Tequila making process, from harvesting, cooking, to distilling the Tequila and tasting Tequila Don Julio 70, 1942 and REAL, three of the añejo and extra-añejo variants that have been aged perfectly in American White Oak Barrels until ready.

Admission is always free at the Mexican American Cultural Center for Exhibits and you can receive a temporary parking pass once requested at the main office.

Here are the recipes for the fantastic drinks served at the event containing Tequila Don Julio so you can make at home: Please Click on images if you would like to enlarge.

Do you have a favorite cocktail that you make with Tequila Don Julio? Would you rather sip on Tequila Don Julio? I really enjoyed sipping Don Julio 1942, but these specialty cocktails are definitely going to be at our next function. I always love a signature cocktail at our parties. If you are 21 years or older & follow @donjuliotequila on Instagram, they post specialty cocktails on their feed.

My Brother is A Great Dad! He does everything for his boys. My nephews will always know love. My brother and nephews live in Seattle & I live in Texas, so we text or call often. When I text my brother, he often responds with, ‘The boys & I went to the beach today’ or ‘We went to see Godzilla’ . Every time I see a picture of my nephews they are genuinely smiling. They are truly happy kids.

My brother has sole custody of my nephews. He fought a long difficult case, but he was not going to let his boys go. He was so grateful and relieved when he won the case & he has never given any reason why he would not have fought so hard.

The 3 of them live together in a nice place. He takes very good care of them if you mean financially. They never want. My brother jokes about their home being a man home and the toilet seats always being left up. Boys! What I love best is the decor. My brother is a fantastic artist. I have many of his pieces in our home. Of course he encourages his boys to create as much as they want & they do. The home is decorated in the boys art. There is no stuffy framed & matted art, but the masterpieces of my nephews all over the place in every room. I love getting mail from my nephews because I get recent masterpieces to display in my card room.

My brother & I lost our dad in 2000. We had an awesome dad. He always encouraged us to be happy. He always spent time with us. We always felt love. I know when I see my brother with his boys, I am seeing my dad. I am so grateful that we had the greatest dad to learn love from. I know our love lessons will not stop at us, but pass down to our children and I know my dad is so happy to see us grow up with our children. I know he is proud.

I was a kid, my parents did not take me to a little park, we packed up and picnicked in Zilker Park. We went to The Zilker Kite Fest every year. This year the kite fest had to be cancelled due to rain~heartbreaking. We rode The Zilker Zephr, the kiddie train that went throughout the park, and waved to the park goers & runners along the Hike & Bike Trail & they waved back. I have many fond memories there.
